Claude Debussy’s love story, Mrs. Basnier and Gabriel Dupont

Claude Debussy’s lover, a love affair with Lady Marie Basnier and Gabriel Dupont, its first story.

Claude Debussy (1862–1918) was a French composer and innovative musician who worked from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.

For us, it is famous for its work called “Moonlight” and “Prelude to the Afternoon of Mokshin”.

He is a great musician who pursues his own music, utilizing the characteristics of Russian and Eastern music, focusing on free music that is not bound by form.

Debussy is musically highly regarded, but later on, he is known as a mean bully who is evaluated as a very dirty low quality in relationships.

Debussy himself liked women, but had a strange charm that women liked him more. Thanks to this, there were always many women around Debussy.

I can’t say he’s good-looking, but he had the impression of a rich man.

Claude Achille Debussy (1862-1918) was born on the northwestern outskirts of Paris to a father who ran a pottery shop and a seamstress mother.

His mother was evacuated from her maternal aunt’s house in Cannes in 1870 to escape the siege of Paris during the Franco-Prussian War, where Debussy took his first piano lessons.

Debussy’s natural talent was immediately revealed, and he entered the Paris Conservatory in 1872 at the age of 10, studying music for 11 years.

1. First lover of Debussy, Mrs. Marie Basnier

Debussy was a very rebellious student, and after two years of learning piano, his talent at the conservatory was remarkably special.

In 1880, when he was attending the Paris Conservatory, he even got a job as a pianist at the house of Tchaikovsky’s sponsor, Nadezhda von Mek, at the recommendation of Professor Marmontel.

And during her summer vacation until 1882, she stayed at her home in Moscow, traveling with the von Meck family to several places in France, Switzerland, and Italy.

From this point on, he was fascinated by Sonja, the daughter of a 15-year-old Mrs. von Meck, and was reported to have made a fuss to ask her mother, Mrs. von Meck, to marry him.

It was not until he returned to Paris that he began to play the piano accompaniment of Marie Moreau-Sainti that this way of love was revealed in earnest

Debussy became the accompaniment of a song by the wife of Marie Vasnier (1848~?) in a vocal music class in 1882. At the time, Mrs. Vasnier was 34 years old and had a talent for vocal music.<<<

However, shortly afterwards, Debussy felt a feeling of love for Mrs. Basnier, who approached her kindly. Mrs. Basnier shook Debussy’s heart.

This impulsive and emotional young man’s temptation also made his wife fall in love with him. Mrs. Basnier soon became Debussy’s lover and muse.

Debussy was hired as an accompaniment to vocal lessons, but Basnier taught him the art of love.

Given the significant age gap, the eight-year relationship also included important maternal elements, with Marie Blanche teaching him how to dress to live in the world.

As Debussy’s mother and lover, she guided him into the deep world of literature and inspired Debussy’s many pieces of love music.

However, her husband Henri Basnier, a high-ranking civil servant who knew nothing, often invited Debussy to their mansion to stay with him, and later even provided Debussy with a piano in a practice room, helping him to ease his financial burden.

2. Debussy’s separation from Roman studies and Mrs. Basnier

Henri, who later learned of Basnier’s relationship with Debussy, a young man, was incredible.

It may have been because of the age difference between Henri and Mrs. Basnier and his own dignity as a high-ranking government official, but Henry maintained a good relationship with Debussy even after learning that the two were avenging grace.

Henri and Mrs. von Meck supported Debussy to succeed as a musician without magnifying the issue. They did him a favor by taking care of Debussy to continue his career as a composer.

Mrs. von Meck had deep musical savvy and helped talented musicians, including financially sponsoring Tchaikovsky, and many musicians were helped by her at the time.

Debussy’s music was unique. Debussy was rejected by the faculty for not following the orthodox rules of composition at the Paris Conservatory, but he applied for a competition at the French Academy of Arts in 1884 and proudly won the top prize thanks to Henri Basnier’s financial support. It happened when he was 22.

The prize in the competition marks a new turning point for Debussy. Debussy separated from Mrs. Basnier by going on a trip to Rome under the leadership of her husband Henri.

Mrs. Basnier’s love also moved away from Debussy, and this series of events was not only Debussy’s musical growth, but also Henri’s deliberate attempt to separate his wife from Debussy.

However, even after going to Rome to study, Debussy occasionally stayed in France until March 1887 to meet his wife Marie Basnier.<<<

In 1887 Debussy decided to end Debussy’s relationship with Marie Basnier, who was the last to return from Rome, but until 1890 Debussy had a good enough relationship to dedicate a song to her.

Debussy became blinded by Mrs. Basnier because she had another woman so young that she could not be compared to Mrs. Basnier.

As a result, Debussy began to devote himself to his creative life as a musician with his studies in Rome after winning the prize in the competition.

3. The daughter of the foundation company meets Gabriel Dupont

Gabriel Dupont was the first woman to see him when he returned to Paris in 1887 after two years of studying in Rome

Debussy, nicknamed Gaby, first moved in with Gabrielle Dupont around 1893, a beautiful woman in her early 20s with green eyes and blonde hair.

Until then, Debussy, a novice composer whose name is still unknown, was not economically rich.

This is because he suffered financial difficulties when he broke up with his lover, Mrs. Basnier, and there was no clear source of income after Mrs. Basnier’s husband Henri’s deliberate support for studying in Rome.

Gabriel and Debussy, the daughter of the tailor, are presumed to have met in an entertainment district and formed an impulsive relationship.

Portrait of Gabriel Dupont

Debussy, a novice composer, was still so poor, but Gabriel Dupont helped him develop his creative dream without being daunted by poverty.

Gabriel was an introverted and devoted woman who devotedly cared for Debussy, who had been in great financial difficulty.

At that time, Debussy was entering the realm of ‘impressionism’ by almost finishing the orchestral music “Night Music”.

Debussy seems to have genuinely loved this woman, who was intelligent but naive and affectionate.

You can get a good glimpse of how he felt just by dedicating “Prelude for the Afternoon of Mokshin” to Gabriel, which is considered one of his greatest masterpieces.

However, Debussy does not give up his natural nature and looks around again even as he meets Gabriel.

He met Carin Stevang, the daughter of a Belgian painter, and Camille Clodell, a sculptor famous for Rodin’s lovers, who only made up a small portion of Debussy’s list of lovers.

In 1894, he even said that he lived with Gabriel but became engaged to the female singer Therese Rosé.

Debussy’s misbehavior was criticized by many. Eventually, the outrageous engagement to Therese was destroyed.

Gyabi was the daughter of a tailor and suddenly met Debussy and moved in with him, but she had a sense of inferiority because she was far from intelligent.

However, although she captivated Debussy with her pretty beauty, she is under such great stress that it is difficult to handle due to Debussy’s flirtation over time.

Their meeting was longer than expected, but over time, they tried to maintain their normal mind by holding back Debussy, who sprinkles numerous women and scandals, and a decisive incident took place.

Debussy found a letter in Debussy’s pocket courting another woman. Perhaps it was difficult to bear it any longer, he eventually tried to kill himself with a pistol. It was in 1897.

Fortunately, their lives were saved. They lived together for about two years after the suicide bombing, but their love finally broke up in 1899.

Dupont loved and hated Debussy enough to choose to die. Debussy’s love behavior after breaking up with Dupont was truly a point-blanket.

Debussy’s dirty nature of reason is revealed in earnest, and meetings with women take place.
